Doors Open Hamilton is an annual free citywide celebration of Hamilton's heritage and cultural diversity. Over 60 of Hamilton's most architecturally historic or culturally significant properties open their doors to thousands of residents and visitors. Many of these buildings normally charge an entrance fee or are not generally open to the public. Most sites organize displays and events to enrich the visitor experience. This annual weekend fulfils a growing public interest in the vibrant heritage and culture of Hamilton.
Included this year: Victorian landmarks, places of faith and worship, a pre-confederation stone house, an early 19th century workers cottage, a former slave's residence, environmentally progressive green buildings and sites that focus on early and current architectural innovations all come to life during Doors Open Hamilton. No reservations. No tickets.
The inspiration for Doors Open Hamilton comes from Europe where there are now over 50 annual Doors Open Day events. In 2002, the Ontario Heritage Trust launched a province wide initiative that now boasts over 40 community events from April to October every year.
In 2007, Doors Open Hamilton exceeded all expectations with more than 28,000 site visits to 59 buildings.
Doors Open Hamilton is organized completely by volunteers and is a signature event for the Hamilton Region Branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario and Tourism Hamilton.
