Historical honours
Michelle Cline, left and Emmeline Gregoroff , Ancaster High School graduates, received the Clementina Fessenden Award for the highest standing in history courses. Two students from Bishop Tonnos Secondary also received the award. The award is presented annually by the Ancaster Township Historical Society. Clementina Trenholme Fessenden (1843-1918) grew up in a household that was passionate for loyalism and British tradition. She is best known for her role in establishing Flag Day in 1897, in tribute to Queen Victoria. The event was later known as Empire Day and Victoria Day. She also founded the Fessenden chapter of the Imperial Daughters of the Empire (IODE).

Pictures from the past
To help celebrate the 125th anniversary of Hamilton Community News' Dundas Star News, the Dundas Museum and Archives and your community newspaper have teamed to give readers an occasional look at this area's rich heritage. John Cowper came to Dundas from England in 1847, eventually establishing a furniture and undertaking business, seen here, on the east side of King Street and Memorial Square (where the Royal Bank now stands). Judging by the clothing, this image was probably taken in the 1860s. The spire of the original St. James Church on Hatt Street can be seen in the background. It was closed in 1926 and a new church built on the present site on Melville Street.

Shown here, the Hamilton and Dundas Railway Dummy #4 and Car #20 in the Dundas station siding on McMurray Street, north of Hatt Street, 1896, Dundas. The "dummy" hauled the passenger trains. It had no bells or whistles and its engine was enclosed to cut down on noise.
