Ancaster's 2010 Canadian Little League Championships got a $22,000 cash infusion thanks to local Wal-Mart shoppers.
From Jan. 1-31, shoppers in Ancaster and Brantford were asked to add $1 to their total bills to support the championships. Contributors were recognized with cardboard Little League icons that were posted inside the store.
More than $22,000 was raised.
"People were very supportive in the community," said Leandra Baker-Murphy, Ancaster Wal-Mart store manager.
This is the first year Wal-Mart has held the Little League fundraiser. Plans are underway to make the fundraiser an annual event until 2010.
Ancaster Little League president Mark Strongman said the funding will help tournament organizers cover the costs of hotel accommodations, food, a tournament banquet and retrofits of Ancaster Little League Park.
During the championship series, visiting youth billet with local families, forging friendships that can last for a lifetime, Mr. Strongman noted.
The 2010 championships will be held in August. The event will determine Canada's six entries at the world championships.
