Re: First ever Relay For Life in Ancaster Dundas
On Friday night, June 20, 700 people pitched tents at the Ancaster Fairgrounds, and walked the track all night. They were participating in the first Ancaster Dundas Relay for Life, a Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser to support research and treatment for all cancers. Cancer survivors launched the Relay with the Survivor Victory Lap. When darkness fell, we lit 1500 luminaries, each bearing the name of a loved one, while we walked together behind a bagpiper playing "Amazing Grace."
For twelve hours, under a full moon, we came together to celebrate, remember and fight back.
Sixty-five teams raised over $200,000, four times our goal. This is a stunning achievement!
Participants and volunteers were fed by Rousseau House, The Opera House Tea Room, the Ancaster Old Mill, Coke, Tim Horton's and the Ancaster AM Rotary Club. Top-notch local entertainers sang to us all night. We thank our major sponsors, Mattamy Homes, Alterra Homes, and deSantis Homes; the Ancaster News and the Dundas Star; K -Lite FM, CHAM, and Oldies 1150.
Most of all, we on the Steering Committee thank all of you who raised money, walked, and volunteered. Our communities of Ancaster and Dundas can stand tall and proud for our generosity and enthusiasm, and our commitment to making cancer history.
We look forward to next year's Ancaster Dundas Relay for Life---June 19 at the new Ancaster Fairgrounds.
Vicky Wylson-Sher and Lorna Pennie Co-Chairs
