If you've been around Ancaster Little League in the last couple of weeks, you've probably heard some rumours about a special little T-ball team.
They may not be big in size but 11 young girls caused quite a stir at a tournament in Erindale a couple of weekends ago.
The tournament featured nine teams, eight of which were comprised of almost all boys. The only all-girls team to enter the tournament came from Ancaster.
The action started with Ancaster battling the Dundas' B team. Ancaster adapted quickly to the harder hits and faster runners even though it was their first game as a new team.
In the last inning, the score was tied with no one on base and only one batter left to hit. Paige Rynne smacked a ball to right field to secure one of her many home runs and the team's first victory.
The second game saw the girls matched up against the Ancaster boys team. It was an awesome game but once again, the girls came out victorious.
Ancaster finished off the day against Kitchener. With a lightning storm not far off, the girls got by another all-boys squad.
Monica Daly and Paige McClure controlled the infield, while newcomers Hannah Stillman, Kaitlyn Dennie, Brynna Taylor and Emma Valentine dominated their respective positions. Megan Child, Brianna Reed, Katie Vanderby and Riley McClure were great leaders, helping out in the infield and dominating the outfield. The girls could not have done it without the amazing expertise of assistant coaches Mark McClure, Pat Daly and Jeff Taylor.
Sunday presented much greater challenges with the girls facing the High Park Braves All-Star A team and Erindale's All-Star team. Ancaster was defeated in both games, but their spirits were not.
The team ended the tournament in the Major division. They were one of the top four teams competing and finished in third place. There were only two teams who went undefeated on Saturday, the High Park All-Stars, who eventually won the tournament, and Ancaster.
For a girls team not expected to win a game, the tournament will likely be one the biggest upsets in T-ball tournament play this year.
