A 19-year-old Hamilton man faces theft and impaired driving charges after stealing a van and taking it for a joy ride at a Mountain Park on the weekend.
Sergeant Terri-Lynn Collings said a resident called Hamilton police at about 3 a.m. last Saturday after seeing a blue Dodge Caravan driving erratically a short distance away from the East 17th Street home from where it was stolen.
"He had been drinking, so his driving wasn't the greatest," she said.
About 20 minutes later, police received a second call from another resident who saw the van driving through Inch Park.
The joy ride came to a halt when the vehicle lost a tie rod. While suspect fled on foot, responding officers managed to catch and arrest him.
Besides the impaired and theft charges, he also faces five counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.
