According to the Canadian Perinatal Health Report -2008 Edition, there has been a rise in the c-section rate. But a study in the perinatal health journal Birth shows doulas can lower the chances of c-section.
The Canadian Perinatal Health Report – 2008 Edition, which was released Dec. 1, details an increase in the c-section rate in Canada from 17.6 per cent in 1994-1995 to 25.6 per cent in 2004-2005. This is an increase of eight per cent in 10 years. By using a doula, women can decrease their likelihood of requiring surgery by 12 per cent, according to Susan K. McGrath and John H. Kennell, who co-authored a study that was reviewed in the perinatal health journal Birth in June 2008.
"Having a doula cuts a woman's chances of having cesarean surgery in half, which is a huge health advantage," said Leanne Palmerston of Hamilton Doula, a doula, childbirth educator and broadcaster.
