Not since 1998 has an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association mens volleyball player been honoured with the nation's top award, but Jasmin Cull again wrote his name into the record books, this time without stepping on the court.
Cull, an Ancaster High graduate, has been named the 2007-08 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Player of the Year.
A fourth year student at Mohawk College, Cull had an outstanding year, earning his second consecutive OCAA Player of the Year honour, as well as his second consecutive CCAA All-Canadian nomination.
Cull and the Mohawk Mountaineers capped an impressive season earlier this week by capturing the bronze medal at the CCAA championships. The fifth-seeded Mountaineers beat the fourth-ranked Limoilou of Quebec City in the bronze medal game.
Leading squad
On the court, Cull was a solid defensive player, finishing second on his team in digs and blocks while leading his squad in kills. But it was from behind the end lines where the lanky 6'4 player made his presence felt the most, posting an impressive 65 service aces on the season, destroying the previous record of 38.
As impressive as his serve may be, Cull made sure teams were aware he was not a one dimensional player, posting 28 kills in the OCAA Provincial Championship game against the defending Provincial Champions and CCAA National Bronze medalist Algonquin Thunder.
In addition to being named OCAA and CCAA player of the year, Cull was West Region scoring champion during the last two seasons and OCAA overall scoring champion. He also set multiple records for service aces.
