For the second straight year, the lady Royals advanced to the championship round of the Ancaster Varsity Girls' Soccer Tournament.

Ancaster lost a hard-fought semi-final game to Holy Trinity of Simcoe, Ont. on penalty kicks.

Players battled wet, dreary conditions and thick fog that limited downfield visibility, especially during early morning competition.

Trailing 1-0 after the first half, the Royals tied the game on a late goal by Emma Roung.

"It was a great shot, right at the 18-yard box," said Ancaster coach Liz Piccioni.

With both teams tied at 1-1 after the second half and a five-minute overtime, a string of bad luck cost the Royals a chance to compete in the championship .

Holy Trinity scored on three of its four penalty kicks, while Ancaster managed just one goal on four attempts, including a shot off the crossbar.

Ancaster cruised through the preliminary round, winning pool A with a 2-0 record. The Royals beat Hill Park 5-1 and shutout Georgetown 2-0.

Kerri Delaney and Emma Roung were Ancaster's top scorers in the May 2 tournament with two goals each.

Holy Trinity advanced to the final, losing 4-1 to St. John's College of Brantford.

Hamilton District Christian High School took the consolation final with a 3-0 win over Hamilton's Sherwood Secondary.

Last year the Royals also advanced to the championship round, but lost a close game in the tournament final.
