In Ancaster Vet Slo-pitch action on Sunday, Aug. 24 the Tigers, Sox, Braves and Giants won and the Orioles and Brewers were rained out.
The Tigers clinched the AL pennant by shutting out the Indians 11-0 behind the sensational pitching of Ron Lacroix and Frank Rocchi. Greg Wilson and Dave McInnis were both three for three at the dish. Infielders Ken Moulden, Dave May and Vince D'Onofrio and outfielders Andy Price, Mike Foley and Dave Anderson flashed the leather. John Belanger, Mike Moulden and Phil Scheiding tore up the base paths and Lee Revill did a solid job back of the dish. Rick McKenzie, Robbie Cavalieri and Richard Brooks played well for the Tribe.
The Giants climbed into first place in the NL over the rained out Brewers by downing the A's 12-7. Tim Leitch was four for four for the Giants while Brian Davies cranked a clutch double. Outfielder Grant Hill led a solid defence behind ace pitcher Dave King. Earl Sutherland led the A's with three hits while Jim Johnston, Brian Revill and Ken Dunhill swung hot bats. Bill Grahlman coaxed a pair of walks and Ray D'Andrade was solid at short to support pitchers Terry Stoltz and Henry Kirchner.
The charging Braves routed the Cardinals with Harry Hill, Keith Beaver, Brian Carey and Mark Cheshire all four for five at the plate. Outfielder Jim Simpson made a scintillating catch to support the outstanding pitching of Ron Brown. Larry Smith, Hank Vipari and Sam Hobbs hit well for the Cardinals and Pat Moulden, John Anderson and Randy Crispo were sharp defensively.
The Sox thumped the Pirates behind the pitching and hitting of Don French. Dave Lindley pulled up his Sox with three hits. Don Freeman was perfect in four trips after his weekly three hour drive. Outfielder Larry Travale made a circus catch after a long run and second sacker Mike Schuster turned in several fielding gems. Tim Wilkinson had four hits to lead the Bucs. Rick Gunter put on a fielding clinic at short while John DeZoete continued to impress with his hustling play.
Vet action resumes at Copetown at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, with the Braves hosting the Sox.
