Senior athletes excel at Actifest 2008 16 local competitors travel to London for competition

Local athletes posted outstanding performances recently at the Ontario Senior Games.

Sixteen competitors from District 22 (Ancaster and Dundas) competed in London, Ontario at Actifest 2008.

Aubrey Smith of Ancaster won the gold medal in the 55-64 category in the 50-metre sprint swim. His time of 38.6 seconds placed him well above the other competitors.

Wilma Jeppesen won a silver medal in women's golf in the 0-25 handicap. She was just one stroke away from gold.

Cameron Clarke also had a strong outing in golf, placing eighth out of 18 golfers.

Larry Shea and Glen Kerr also competed in bid euchre. Ruth Roe and Shirley Renton took part in contract bridge. A team comprised of Bob Nelson, Jim Verrall, Anna Thomson, Bill Bleses and Carol Bleses competed in five-pin bowling. Ron and Mary Smithson played floor shuffleboard. Golfers Bob Harris and Cameron Clarke competed for the men while Shirley Glauser and Wilma Jeppeson competed for the women.

Actifest is the summer portion of the Ontario Senior Games. It includes approximately 1,000 senior athletes from across the province. To qualify for the three-day competition, entrants must be 55 years or older. Competitors must also qualify in a local event prior to the games.

London's Actifest included 17 events. Actifest includes both active and passive events to give competitors with different physical abilities the opportunity to participate and meet other seniors with similar interests.

District 22 is currently looking for competitors for Winterfest 2009, to be held in Brockville, Ont., Feb. 11-13. Winterfest events include alpine skiing, badminton, bowling, bridge, curling, hockey, prediction ice skating, prediction cross-country skiing, squash, table tennis and volleyball.
