On the ice that night, the Junior C squad didn’t fare quite as well after Walter Gretzky dropped the puck with Madison and Genna, as the Peach Kings moved in for a 3-1 win.
The Blues coughed up the puck in the opening frame’s final minute and the Peach Kings jumped on the opportunity to take a 1-0 lead.
Kris Draper tied the game with an early second period power-play goal, assisted by Cody Collett and Jonathon Cox. But two slashing penalties cost the Blues, as Grimsby again took advantage of the opportunities. The Peach Kings scored power-play goals in the second and third period to take the win.
Co-coach Steve Aglor credited Blues goalie Scott Anderson with a solid game and said the net-minder made many big saves. He described the team’s slashing penalties as “selfish.”
Owner and Co-coach Dan Caco agreed.
“You can’t take selfish penalties and expect to win against a team like Grimsby, selfishness cost us the game,” Caco said.
But he didn’t leave the Grightmire Arena with a grim outlook.
“We’ve had some injuries to key players and that has kept them out of the line-up –but we’re still in every game. We will be a tough team to beat when we all get healthy.”
In fact, just one night before in Glanbrook, the Blues showed grit and determination after giving up a two-goal lead to come back and win on the road 6-5. The Blues opened last Wednesday night’s game with a 4-2 lead in the first period with goals from Mike Peters, Aaron Demain, Brian Buehler and Jeremy Beresh. But they watched it disappear with three straight Glanbrook goals in the second. The Blues stepped up in the third as DJ McConnell tied the game halfway through the frame, assisted by Andrew Clark and Kevin Dowling.
Aglor called Dowling one of the team’s “hardest workers” and he proved it again with a goal less than a minute after assisting on the tying marker to give Dundas the win.
Kyle Draper, Ryan Golow, Andrew Clark, Cole McNeil and Cody Collett all picked up assists.
The Blues’ next home game is Nov. 6 against Aylmer Spitfires.
