Semi-final action gets underway this Sunday at Ivor Wynne Stadium, with all three Lion teams making the playoffs for the first time in a long time.
The Tyke Lions finished the regular season with a record of 3-5, which earned a fourth place finish in the division. The Tyke Lions will face the Tyke Riders, who finished the regular season in first place with a record of 8-0.
"They are certainly going to be a tough team to play," said Tyke Lions head coach John O’Brien. "However, we felt that we matched up pretty good against them, when we played them back in Week 2."
The Tyke Lions and Tyke Riders square off at 9 a. m. on Sunday, Nov. 2.
In the Atom division, the Lions, like the Tykes, finished the regular season in fourth place with a 3-5 record. The Atom Lions have a first round playoff date with the Atom Ti-Cats, who finished the regular season in first place with an 8-0 record. This is a rematch of last year’s semi-final game.
"We played them last year and it was a tough loss for us," said head coach Damien Condon. "We are hoping to have a different result this time around."
The Atom Lions take on the Atom Ti-Cats at noon this Sunday.
Closing out the regular season with an undefeated record of 7-0-1, the Peewee Lions are the top team in their division going into the playoffs.
Head coach Mike Rand’s Lions will battle the fourth-place Peewee Bombers, who finished with a record of 3-5, in the first round of the semi-finals in Peewee action on Sunday afternoon at 3 p. m.
"This is going to be quite the game," Rand said. "We have developed a fierce rivalry with this team and I guess it started back in the semi-finals last year when they beat us pretty bad with a score of 54-8."
Point difference
The two regular season meetings between these two clubs had a total point difference of five. In the first game, the Lions won 12-10 and the most recent game was a 20-17 Lions win.
"I am extremely proud of the season we have had thus far, with the character and determination of the guys,” said Rand.
“We will need to carry all that into Sunday for us to be able to be successful and move forward to the championship."
