On Oct. 30, the senior boys football team played its final game against longtime rivals Westdale. With a 3-3-0-1 record, the boys will not continue on to the playoffs. They faced the number-one team in the league in their final regular season game.
“But for us it was beyond making the playoffs” said Will Rabah, the team’s linebacker and one of the highest ranked defenders in the league, “It was a chance to prove everyone wrong.”
Ancaster played a hard-fought game against Westdale, which they eventually lost in overtime 14-8.
“The game was played dead even by both teams and Westdale just came out on top” Alex Hampel, the team’s quarterback, explained.
Ancaster held its own against its toughest competition and it is for this reason they were able to end their season with success. For many of the senior football players, last Thursday’s game was the last of their high school career. With respect to their season come and gone, Will Rabah says “It’s going to be hard to hang up my equipment, but I’ll do it knowing that I played with the best group of guys possible.”
The junior girls basketball team began the playoffs on Monday with a game against Sir Winston Churchill. The girls lost only two of 28 regular season games, placing them first in the rankings. If the girls continue with the success they’ve achieved all season, they will play in the city finals at Westdale today (Friday).
“We just need to work as a team if we really want to win” said point guard and shooting guard Kelsey Turner.
The start of November also marks the beginning of both the boys and girls varsity hockey seasons. Tryouts for the boys team are well under way and a finalized roster is expected shortly. The girls team has been selected and began practices.
“There are a lot of new Grade 9 players and we are looking forward to building a strong team and having a good season,” says Meredith Walker, a member of the newly formed team. The Ancaster girls’ varisty hockey team has a tournament scheduled for Nov. 19-20. The junior boys basketball team also got its season underway last week with the first practice. Junior girls volleyball try-outs began earlier this week.
October has been an exciting and successful month and with so many new teams beginning try-outs and practices, November is sure to be just as eventful.
