McCoys drop two on Lost Weekend

The strong play of the Real McCoys and their 4-0 record were not the most important part of the evening last Friday. Chris Klodt, Canadian Forces veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan, and Charlie Cetinski of the Wheel to Walk campaign were on hand to drop the puck at the start of the game.

Charlie, who hails from Freelton was the driving force behind the organization to raise awareness and funds for the Spinal Neurorestorative Society. He was also instrumental in the forming of the Golden Horseshoe Marathon to benefit spinal cord research and other related areas. Chris, a local hero, has been lending his support to the campaign since its inception.

From a hockey standpoint, it was a weekend the McCoys might want to forget. On Friday night, Dundas hosted Brantford Blast and despite showing strong offensive power, came out on the short end of a 6-5 score.

The McCoys fell behind 2-0 early and could not find an answer for Brantford goalie Chris Houle as they outshot the Blast 18-7. The second period started off fast for Dundas with a goal by Frank Grandits. The McCoys continued to play great offence, and mid-way through the second, Justin Davis tied the game. Brantford scored another power-play goal but Grandits, playing with a lot of heart and desire, put Dundas back in the game. Captain Mike Kennedy put Dundas ahead with a bullet shot and just moments later Justin Davis added to the lead 5-3. The McCoys seemed to sit back after that and Brantford took advantage with two goals to tie the score at the end of the period. The third period was much like the first. The play went back and forth until late in the period. With 2:19 left, the McCoys gave the puck away and Brantford made them pay.

After the game, Don Robertson of the coaching and management team said, "While we were generally satisfied with our offensive output, we need to tighten up the defence a little and we fully intend to get stronger in that area".

On Saturday the McCoys travelled to Whitby. The team was short a couple of bodies, especially on defence, and it showed, with the Dunlops getting four power-play goals and two short-handed markers. The McCoys had 10 power-play opportunities but came up short on all of them. The only stats advantage Dundas held was in the shots on goal, edging Whitby 30-25. Scoring for the McCoys were Boris Gospavic, with his second of the year, Sam Campbell with his first and Scott Smith with his initial goal as well.

The McCoys’ next home game is Nov. 21 against Whitby at the J. L. Grightmire arena on Market Street in Dundas at 7:45 p. m.
